Soyuz-TMA 2 is the replacement for Soyuz-TMA 1. The Soyuz is used as a lifeboat for the ISS. Because of fuel degradation, the Soyuz needs to be replaced every six months. Originally, the upload crew was to have returned in Soyuz-TMA 1 after a several day stay aboard the ISS. Due to the destruction of the shuttle Columbia on 1 February 2003 and the grounding of the shuttle fleet, Soyuz-TMA 2 became the vehicle to both upload and download the Expedition 7 crew.

The problems which occurred with the Soyuz-TMA 1 landed were resolved and this landing was uneventful.
