Countdown to the Millennium

The above headline is from January 1, 2000. People who had spent the previous evening making merry and celebrating the end of the 20th century had been duped. They had spent untold fortunes on "stuff" labeled as the last (whatever) of the century/millennium, only to find the same stuff now billed as the first (whatever) of the century/millennium. Keep all the stuff called "first" because it is indeed the last. As for the stuff called "last", well, it should have gone out with last year's Christmas tree.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the next millennium, the 21st century, the next decade will begin on January 1, 2001.
