In 1989, the Tokyo Broadcasting System sponsored Tohiro Akiyama (television journalist) and Ryoko Kikuchi (television reporter) to train in Russia for a flight to the Mir space station. Akiyama flew to Mir aboard Soyuz TM-11 in December 1990. Kikuchi was his backup and never flew in space.

Dr. Mohri was appointed as the first director of the National Museum of
Emerging Science and Innovation (MeSci) in 2000.
Dr. Mukai has been serving as Senior Advisor to the JAXA Executive
Director since April 2011.
