Kikuchi was a television reporter for the Tokyo Broadcasting System. She, along with Tohiro Akiyama, were selected by TBS to fly to the Russian space station Mir. Kikuchi was the backup to Akiyama and never flew in space. The trip cost TBS (US)$28 million.
