Christa McAuliffe, a teacher at Concord High School (New Hampshire), was selected in 1984 for the Teacher in Space Program. Because of her popularity and the attention she received, the Challenger 51-L flight created much excitement. Her death contributed  significantly to the Challenger tragedy. Christa held a masters degree in education from Bowie State College, Bowie, Maryland. She was married with two children.
