This launch was preceded by 5 drops of the descent module from 36,000 ft (11,000 m) in a test of the parachute and landing systems. ShenZhou 4 flew with two life-sized dummies and 52 experiments. The orbiter module remained in space for over eight months to conduct scientific experiments. It reentered on 9 September 2003.
This flight was the precursor to a manned ShenZhou 5 mission planned for later in 2003.
