Agena Target Vehicle
This vehicle, launched by an Atlas rocket, was a derivative of an Agena-D second stage rocket (Lockheed Aircraft) and a docking adapter developed by McDonnell Aircraft. The pupose of the ATV was to:
- Gemini rendezvous and docking practice
- Use Agena's attitude control system to save Gemini propellants
- Had a tool panel for EVA practice
- Boost Gemini to a higher orbit
- Had a tethering system to practice and observer the effects of fomation flying
Augmented Target Docking Adaptor
This was a backup docking target consisting of a Gemini docking collar and attitude control propulsion. The was NO Agena rocket attached.
