This was the first launch of what was to be the first double spaceflight. Vostok 4 would be launched the next day with Pavel R. Popovich aboard. The two craft passed within 6.5 km of each other. Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 landed within 15 minutes and 193 km of each other.

Nikolayev unstrapped himself and floated free in his small capsule, the first person to do so. He did not suffer any space sickness during his flight.
