Soyuz TMA-12 was the replacement for Soyuz TMA-11. The Soyuz is used as a lifeboat for the ISS. Because of fuel degradation, the Soyuz needs to be replaced every six months.

Ko San of South Korea was originally scheduled to fly this mission, but was disqualified due to repeated training violations.
