This was the first test of a Soyuz spacecraft. There was to be a docking with another Soyuz launched the next day. Ground issues delayed the second launch. Before that could happen, the attitude control system malfunctioned which consumed excessive fuel and the craft spinning at 2 rpm. After several retrofire attempts, the craft began descending into China. Self-destruct was commanded on 30 November at 10:21 UTC. The resulting fireball passed over Japan.
The intended target (Soyuz 7K-OK No.1) was finally scheduled to launch on 14 December 1966 from 31/6. At 11:00 UTC, one of the strap-on boosters failed to start. While trying to safe the vehicle, the launch escape system fired. The descent module landed 400 meters from the launch pad, while the exhaust caught the third stage on fire. One person on the ground was killed and the pad took seven months to repair.
