This test flight of a Vostok spacecraft carried two dogs, Belka and Strelka, along with 40 mice, 2 rats, and a variety of plants. Both dogs and 12 of the mice safely landed. Belka became sick and vomited during the 4th orbit, which is why Yuri Gagarin was limited to only one orbit during his flight.
