This test flight of a Vostok spacecraft carried two dogs, Pcholka and Mushka, along with mice, rats, rabbits, flies, and plants. A malfunction of the infared orientation sensor caused the craft to go out of control and in the wrong orientation for re-entry. Rather than have the vehicle land outside of Soviet territory, the vehicle was destroyed, kill all occupants.
