After the Soyuz 1 tragedy, it was decided to do more testing before the next manned flight. After serious on-orbit checkout, Kosmos 188 was launched as a passive target for Kosmos 186. Just 62 minutes after the launch of Kosmos 188, Kosmos 186 automatically docked with it. They remained docked for 3 and a half hours. It was not a total success, as the docking was mechanical only. Electrical docking was not achieved.

Kosmos 186 made a ballistic descent and was recovered.
